MSI is preparing to launch several new models of Z790 MAX series motherboards that will provide immediate support for upcoming 14th Gen Intel Core processors (Raptor Lake Refresh). Thanks to a new leak, the main features of the updated boards have become known, which distinguish them from the current variants based on the Z790 chipset from the same manufacturer.
It is currently known that MSI will release MEG Ace MAX, MPG Carbon MAX WIFI, MPG Edge MAX WIFI and MAG Tomahawk MAX boards as part of Z790 MAX series. All will initially receive support for Raptor Lake Refresh processors in the fall and will also work with DDR5 RAM. The key features of the updated boards will be more powerful VRM power supply subsystems, as well as (theoretically) more efficient cooling systems. All of this is intended to improve the stability of the Raptor Lake Refresh chips.
The MSI MEG Z790 Ace Max flagship model gets a 24-phase VRM DUET Rail power supply subsystem with phases rated for 105A of current. The LGA 1700 socket is powered by two 8-pin connectors. The board offers four DIMM slots with support for DDR5-7600+ memory modules with a total capacity of up to 192 GB. The novelty will also have five M.2 slots for NVMe drives, two PCIe x16 (x16 / x8), one of which conforms to the PCIe 5.0 standard, and the other to PCIe 4.0. The set of connectors for connecting peripheral devices on the board remains basically the same. The novelty is distinguished by the support of Wi-Fi 7 and a 5 Gigabit LAN network adapter.
The following are the MSI MPG MAX models: Z790 Carbon Max WIFI and Z790 Edge MAX WIFI. The Carbon Max model gets a fair 19 phase VRM subsystem with 105A SPS phases. The Edge MAX, on the other hand, offers an 8-phase VRM with doublers and 90A phases. Carbon Max model supports memory up to DDR5-7600+ , Edge MAX model – up to DDR5-7200+. Carbon Max version comes in a dark theme, Edge MAX is for white builds. Both novelties look attractive and will support Wi-Fi 7. Carbon Max is equipped with a 5 Gigabit LAN network adapter, Edge MAX – 2.5 Gigabit.
The popular Tomahawk motherboard series is expanded with the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk MAX WIFI model, which features a 16-phase 90A VRM power supply system, support for DDR5-7200+ memory modules, WI-Fi 7 and a 2.5- Gigabit offers network adapters.
Despite the traditionally lower price compared to other boards, MSI Tomahawk boards mostly offer excellent features for their price segment. The updated MAG Z790 Tomahawk MAX WIFI is no exception. It gets four M.2 slots with Shield Frozr heatsinks, 8 SATA III ports, two full-size PCIe slots, and a large set of external ports including two USB Type-Cs on the back. In addition, it is equipped with two 8-pin connectors to supply power to the processor. The rest of the images of the updated MSI board models can be found in the gallery below.
The cost of MSI Z790 MAX boards is unknown. However, it is clear that they will be slightly more expensive than the manufacturer’s current models based on the Z790 chipset. Remember that the announcement of the Raptor Lake Refresh processors is expected next month. They are rumored to go on sale in October.
