YouTube will make it easier to turn full-length videos into short films

YouTube video hosting aims to make it as easy as possible for content creators to convert long videos into short videos in Shorts format. Available directly in the YouTube mobile app, the new Edit To Short File tool allows Android and iOS users to select up to 60 seconds from a long video and import it into the shorts editor. After that, you can add text, filters, as well as additional videos captured in the shorts environment or taken from your personal library.

YouTube said the final short video will include a link to the full video of which it is a derivative – this could make the shorts service an ideal tool for promoting longer content. If the users like the short video, they can read the information in more detail.

Unlike other tools like Cut, which allow five seconds of a longer video to be used in Short, the new tool cannot be used with other users’ uploads – it can only be used on videos of your own production.

YouTube has given the shorts feature quite a bit of attention since its debut in 2020, taking a number of steps from setting up a fund to pay short content creators to converting existing videos into shorts for “vertical” content with a Length of up to 60 seconds. Last month, the company said more than 1.5 billion people watch videos of the format every month.

According to YouTube, the Edit in a Short tool lets you “breathe new life into your classic content” – access to the feature has already started appearing in different regions of the world. While the tool is unlikely to replace traditional video editing software when creating videos for short films, it can inspire creators to revisit their old videos to “reanimate” them in a new format.
