Pavni Diwanji, vice president of youth affairs at Meta Platforms, is stepping down as part of a restructuring program. In particular, she was responsible for the development of the children’s version of the Instagram application.
“We are grateful to Pavni for everything she has done for Instagram. Despite our ongoing organizational changes, developing safe and age-appropriate products for teenagers remains a top priority for us at Meta.”, — Meta spokesperson Stephanie Otway commented on the resignation of a top executive. Ms. Divanji herself has not yet commented on her departure from the company.
According to professional social network LinkedIn, Pavni Divanji joined Meta (then Facebook) in December 2020. Before that, she was a vice president at Google, where she oversaw work on YouTube for kids and other projects for family audiences. As Ms Otway clarified, Instagram head Adam Mosseri will oversee work on youth projects.
The spokeswoman also said that while work on Children’s Instagram was indefinitely suspended last September, the project is not yet complete and remains frozen. At the time the project was shelved, Mr Mosseri said the company needed time for further consultation with parents, experts and lawmakers. In his opinion, unless a special version of the application is developed for them, young users will still lie about their age to gain access to Instagram.
