You can replace yourself with a 3D avatar in video calls in Microsoft Teams starting in May

Starting in May, Microsoft Teams Corporate Messenger users will be able to connect 3D avatars, according to an updated version of the Microsoft 365 roadmap. The company announced this feature back in 2021 and has been testing it in a closed format for the past few months.

Avatars in Microsoft Teams will be relevant for those who do not want to pose in front of the camera at work meetings: if a person does not like the video format or needs a break, he can replace his image with a three-dimensional figure that moves according to the user’s sound signal – the camera is not needed at all.

Microsoft also plans to use this technology in a special version of the enterprise messenger that works with Meta* Virtual reality headset designs. A special version of the Teams client allows you to hold working meetings in a virtual space – all participants in such events are represented by 3D avatars with flying emoticons and simple animations, for example, with the ability to raise your hand to ask for it ask words. However, in the initial phase, avatars will only appear in desktop versions of the client for Windows and macOS.

* It is included in the list of public associations and religious organizations for which the court made a final decision to liquidate or ban activities on the grounds provided for in Federal Law No. 114-FZ of July 25. 2002 “On Countering Extremist Activities”.
