The European company Schenker Technologies presented the XMG Neo 15 gaming laptop. The main feature of the 15-inch novelty is not that it is equipped with 12th generation Intel Core processors, nor is it equipped with the latest GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards. More curiously, the laptop comes with an optional XMG Oasis external liquid cooling system.
As the heart of the XMG Neo 15, the company is ready to offer an Intel Core i7-12700H processor and GeForce RTX 30 series graphics accelerators, ranging from the GeForce RTX 3060 to the latest GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. The laptop received a 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 × 1220 pixels, a refresh rate of 240 Hz, a brightness of 350 cd / m22 and 95% coverage of the sRGB color space. It also offers up to 64 GB DDR5-4800 memory and up to two M.2 SSDs with PCIe 4.0 support.
The new features include Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1, 2.5 Gbit / s LAN network connection, three USB 3.2 Type A ports, a pair of 3.5 mm audio jacks for headphones and a microphone as well as a slot for SD memory cards. It should also support the WLAN standard Wi-Fi 6. The notebook is powered by a 93 Wh battery. A 280 W power supply is included in the scope of delivery. The XMG Neo 15 measures 360.2 x 243.5 x 26.6 mm and weighs 2.2 kg.
XMG Oasis, on the other hand, is a mixture of a maintenance-free “Set and Forget” LSS and a customer-specific LSS that has to be picked up, serviced and refilled from time to time. The device measures 203 × 75 × 186 mm and contains a 120 mm radiator with fan, an expansion tank for coolant and a pump. On the front of the XMG Oasis there are two branch pipes that connect the LSS to the corresponding port on the back of the laptop. The ports are connected to an annular heat pipe inside the laptop that is in direct contact with the heat pipes of the laptop’s air cooling system. The weight of the XMG Oasis LSS together with the liquid is 1.39 kg, the dry weight is 1.18 kg.
To fill the tank Xmg oasis a funnel must be used with the refrigerant. The manufacturer points out that approx. 230 ml of liquid are required to fill the circuit. On the XMG Oasis itself there is a special window that shows the fill level of the route.
The company recommends using EK-CyroFuel Clear refrigerant, but the instructions for the LZS itself indicate that any refrigerant commonly used in desktop LSSs can be used. Clear water cannot be used.
According to the company, XMG Oasis is able to lower the average operating temperature of the GPU and CPU by 20 degrees. At the same time, the noise level of the LSS will not exceed 38 dB under the most intense loads. Under average load, the speed of the laptop fans with the LSS connected does not exceed 50% of the maximum. The XMG Oasis can be controlled via Bluetooth. Minimum settings: You can change the pump speed and the RGB lighting. The LSS is powered by the laptop battery itself.
When the LSS is disconnected from the portable gaming system, the XMG Neo 15 can be used like a normal laptop with air cooling. However, shutting down the XMG Oasis requires preliminary preparation to avoid leaks. Before turning off the LSS, you must first turn off the laptop. Then you should drain the liquid from the laptop cooling system. To ensure that the LSS circuit in the laptop is empty, you need to gently shake the laptop from side to side and check the drain to prevent liquid from spilling onto the external ports.
The company also warns of the dangers of using the XMG Neo 15 laptop outdoors, especially during the cold season. The remaining liquid in the LSS circuit can freeze. In addition, the risk of the device falling increases. It is very important to drain the liquid from the LSS system and ensure that the system is completely drained each time before using the laptop in offline mode.
The costs for the XMG Neo 15 notebook itself, complete with Intel Core i7-12700H processor, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics card, 16 GB DDR5-4800 RAM and 500 GB SSD, will be around 2,500 euros. The company claims the cost for LSS XMG Oasis “Will not be exceeded” 200 euros. It should also be noted that XMG Oasis was designed to support future laptop models from the manufacturer.
Incidentally, it is not the first time that laptop manufacturers have offered to equip gaming laptops with liquid cooling. ASUS released the ROG GX700 laptop in 2016. In order to effectively cool the Core i7-6820HK processor and the GeForce GTX 980 graphics card in their composition, the manufacturer suggested using an external docking station with LSS. The system did not allow the refrigerant to be changed and was larger than the new XMG product.
