The PCI SIG, which is responsible for the development of PCI bus-based communication standards, has announced the release of version 0.9 of the PCIe 6.0 specification. This means that the work on the corresponding standard is nearing completion and the final specifications of the new PCIe version will be approved quite soon.
PCIe 6.0 offers double the bandwidth over PCIe 5.0. The data transfer rate reaches 64 GT / s (gigatransactions per second). In the x16 configuration, up to 256 GB of information per second is transferred.
Instead of the previously used no-return-to-zero (NRZ) pulse train transmission, a Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM4) transmission scheme has been implemented.
Low-latency Forward Error Correction (FEC) is provided. Declared backward compatibility with PCIe standards of all previous generations.
The PCIe 6.0 specification version 0.9 is the final draft of the new standard. There are no plans to add functional changes in the future.
The first commercial PCIe 6.0-based products are expected to hit the market in 2023-2024.
