“Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” to become a series

Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar will make the first series of his career. He is producing the chapter adaptation of his award-winning comedy “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (1988), the first of his Oscar-nominated films.

The project is being developed for the Apple TV+ platform and will feature actress Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) as one of the protagonists. She is supposed to play Pepa, a character that was originally played by Carmen Maura.

Produced by Almodóvar-based company El Deseo, the series, which is expected to mix English and Spanish, will be directed by screenwriter and showrunner Noelle Valdivia (“Masters of Sex”).

Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez (“No Returns Accepted”) is also listed among the producers of the project, which will have funding from Lionsgate TV.

It is worth remembering that Almodóvar’s script, awarded at the Venice Film Festival, had already been turned into a Broadway musical in 2010.

Remember below the trailer of the original film, winner of the Goya (the Spanish Oscar) and responsible for turning Almodóvar’s career, turning the hitherto cult filmmaker into a commercial phenomenon.
