Short-video service TikTok continues to struggle to survive in the US, where calls have continued for the app to be banned because it is owned by a Chinese company. This week, TikTok executives and pro-service lobbyists briefed US Congress, researchers and think-tank pundits on the details of the $1.5 billion Project Texas program to address the country’s problems with the service to tackle

A recent debate with US officials and TikTok officials outlined the main points of TikTok’s efforts to reassure US regulators that the service poses no threat to the country’s national security. Matt Perault, director of the Center for Technology Policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, believes much of the political debate surrounding TikTok is based on conjecture. According to him, as part of the Project Texas program, the management of TikTok had the opportunity to convince the authorities of the safety of its service.
It was previously reported that the Project Texas program plans to isolate American TikTok users’ sensitive data so that only US employees of the company can access it. The management noted that the project is very difficult to implement and requires large investments, but in the end it will help solve problems that have been worrying the American authorities for years.
TikTok is very popular in the US. Back in 2020, the administration of President Donald Trump (Donald Trump) tried to ban the application, citing that employees of the service in China could access Americans’ data. They say this poses a threat to national security. Last month, the US Congress voted to ban the use of TikTok on the devices of members of the federal government, and this month senators returned to discuss the option to ban the service in the country entirely.
As of this writing, it’s unclear whether TikTok’s recent efforts will have the desired result, as the service’s management continues to negotiate a security deal with US authorities to address concerns about potential TikTok threats. As part of the Project Texas program, the company intends not only to isolate US users’ data in the country, but also to create a board of directors to oversee the activities of a new subsidiary that will ensure the security of US users’ data .
