The Elite: Dangerous Space Sim Odyssey expansion will not be released for consoles. The release of the DLC on the PlayStation and Xbox was supposed to take place last year, but has been postponed indefinitely, as recently the developers at Frontier Developments announced about the cancellation of these versions.
The reasons for the decision were revealed by the studio’s president and founder, David Breben (David Braben), in an appeal to players published on the studio’s official blog.
Elite: Dangerous is close to my heart.
It’s no secret that the start of the Odyssey was far from ideal. We had to separate the PC and console player base to focus on the PC release. Since the release of Odyssey in May 2021, we’ve worked tirelessly to improve the PC version of the expansion, and while we’ve made significant progress, there’s still work to be done. Since then we’ve been supporting codebases created before and after the release of the DLC.
For the past few months we’ve been trying to figure out the best way to move forward, but in the end, with a heavy heart, we stopped development on consoles. We need the ability to develop the game’s story, which needs to be focused on a code base. Elite: Dangerous will continue to exist on consoles and receive major updates, but our focus will shift to new PC content updates on the post-Odyssey codebase.
We understand that our console community has been hoping for more news. It wasn’t an easy decision, but we made it with the long-term future of Elite: Dangerous in mind.”
The PC version of Odyssey was released on May 19, 2021. Due to the large number of technical issues at launch, the expansion had less than a third of the positive reviews steam (current overall rating is 33% based on over 6,000 reviews). Users complained about poor optimization, crashes, server disconnects, and bugs. In addition, many were dissatisfied with the gameplay solutions. Then Breben apologized to customers for the failed launch and promised to fix bugs and improve stability.
The authors positioned Odyssey as the most ambitious add-on for the simulator’s entire existence. Among other things, the expansion added the ability to explore planets on foot, interact with other players in social zones across the galaxy, and engage in large-scale battles involving starships, ground vehicles, and commanders.
Elite: Dangerous was released on PC in 2014, on Xbox One in 2015 and on PlayStation 4 in 2017.
