Square Enix’s acclaimed Final Fantasy RPG series celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2022 and hit a new sales high shortly after the release of Final Fantasy XVI.
As noted by the portal noisy pixelV press release (Only available in Japanese) Square Enix’s collaboration with the Takarazuka Theater shows that Final Fantasy games have sold a total of more than 180 million copies.
In this regard, the recent success of Final Fantasy XVI (3 million copies in six days of release) was probably not taken into account when calculating the total sales of the games in the series: the new installment in the franchise was only released on PS5 on June 22nd.
Back to the milestone: Final Fantasy has seen a remarkable increase in sales over the past year: March 2022 the total circulation was 173 million copies. Thus, in less than a year and a half, Square Enix sold around 7 million games in the series.
As noted in the forum ResetEraGrand Theft Auto also recently sold 180 million copies, but not the entire series as a whole, as in the case of Final Fantasy, but only Grand Theft Auto V, which was released in 2013.
Final Fantasy XVI is only available for PS5 for the time being, but will also appear on other platforms in the future – a PC version is officially in the works. You should not expect a publication in the next six months: the project needs to be optimized.
