The new Notes app can be layered over the game. The application has cloud synchronization and can also work offline. In addition to the notepad, you can pin the following to the top of the game window: manuals, discussions, and the Steam web browser. All overlay windows in the game have adjustable transparency.

In the overlay, the user now immediately sees the new game overview, the quick access toolbar, the updated notifications tab and the screenshot manager. The update patch also includes additional hardware acceleration for the Linux and macOS versions of Steam, as well as minor UI changes.

According to Valve, the updates will be rolled out simultaneously to Steam Desktop, Big Picture Mode, and Steam Deck, although Deck only works in Linux desktop mode so far. Valve’s UX Designer Lawrence Yang has confirmed that Notes Mode will be coming to Steam Deck at a later date.

In order to access the new features of the Steam overlay and in-game notebook, the user must become a Steam beta tester. At the moment it is not known when the new features will reach the stable version of the client.
