One of the users of the Reddit forum released Images of a prototype Radeon graphics card that once could have been part of the AMD Vega 20 series of GPU-based accelerators, but for some reason it wasn’t.
AMD has released several accelerator models based on the Vega 20 GPU with the GCN 5.1 architecture. This is a Radeon VII gaming graphics card with 3840 stream processors and 16GB of HBM2 memory with a bandwidth of 1TB/s; Radeon Instinct MI50 and MI60 server accelerators with 3840 and 4096 stream processors, respectively; as well as the Radeon Pro Vega II. The latter is perhaps the most interesting of the list. Designed exclusively for Apple Mac Pro computers, it used the MPX format and featured dual Vega 20 GPUs with 32GB of HBM2 memory. It was the most powerful Radeon graphics card at the time.
A prototype of an unknown Radeon graphics card based on the Vega 20 GPU, discovered by one of Reddit’s users, is recognized by the software as a Radeon Pro VII model. However, the device PCI ID of the adapter is the same as the Radeon Instinct MI60 model with 4096 cores. So this prototype is somewhere in between. A user posted an image of a board with a Vega 20 GPU and four HBM2 memory modules.
The card is powered by two connectors – one 8-pin and one 6-pin. It is very likely that its power consumption is around 300 watts. On the circuit board, you can also note the presence of technical connectors for testing the thermal and power performance of the graphics card, which manufacturers use exclusively in the development process. This confirms that this instance is not the final product.
The Reddit user also shared information about the card’s performance in real-world conditions. As it turned out, the prototype does not work at full speed. Its performance level in single-precision operations is about 13.5 Tflops, and the memory speed reaches 6614 MB / s. It can also be noted that the frequency of the graphics card’s GPU reaches 1.7 GHz, that is, the same as that of the Radeon Pro VII -model.
The TechPowerUP portal database has picture this model. According to the information, the specified accelerator should receive the official name Radeon Pro V420.
