The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077’s action RPG codenamed Orion is still a long way from release, but it’s now known who will be leading the development of CD Projekt RED’s ambitious sequel.

In an interview Bloomberg Gabriel Amatangelo, head of development for Cyberpunk 2077 (since May 2021) and the Phantom Liberty add-on, confirmed that Orion will take the helm after all matters are finalized with the add-on.
Amatangelo joined CD Projekt RED in January 2020 and, following the departure of Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, has taken over the production of the Phantom Liberty as well as the major patch 1.5 released in February 2022.
The Witcher 3 expansions were released within a year of the game’s release and Phantom Liberty has been in development for over two years.
Now Amatangelo’s team is finishing work on the Phantom Liberty. According to the specialist, CD Projekt’s board of directors gave its team full carte blanche (all the resources and time required to do so). “Fix Everything”.
“The commitment of the board [всё сделать как надо] is really amazing. I was shocked at the modesty and willingness [руководства CD Projekt] exchange”— Amatangelo shared.
As for Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will be built on Unreal Engine 5 by CD Projekt RED’s new studio in Boston. Phantom Liberty will be the last CDPR project on the internal RED engine.
Don’t expect an early release: CD Projekt confirmed in a recent financial report that (pre)work on Orion will only start in early 2024. Phantom Liberty, meanwhile, will be released on September 26th.
