It was recently reported that PCI-SIG is developing a 12V2x6 fusible power connector to replace the original 12VHPWR used in GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards. As the portal Igor’sLAB found out, NVIDIA already uses the new connector in the reference GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition. In addition, the new connector was found in some non-standard versions of this video card model.
To prevent improper connection of the power connector to the power connector on PCI-SIG graphics cards, NVIDIA and NVIDIA have developed an improved version of the connector with a more reliable mechanism for locking the connector into the power connector. The new 12V2x6 connector is known to have reduced the length of the four signal pins, which are intended to determine the maximum power that can be transmitted over the power cable, compared to the original 12VHPWR. In the new version, they are lower in the connector holder. Current only flows through the cord when the power cord is firmly plugged into the outlet.
Many released versions of the GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card come with traditional 8-pin power connectors. However, some variants of the accelerator that originally used the 12+4-pin 12VHPWR connector apparently already received a modified connector. These include NVIDIA’s Founders Edition reference version of the GeForce RTX 4070 as well as variants of the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming. In addition, MSI has already presented a new series of power supplies equipped with a new 12V2x6 connector.
“Since the release of the GeForce RTX 4070 FE, NVIDIA has already been using a modified 12VHPWR connector with significantly shortened signal pins. The GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition still features the original 12VHPWR CEM 5.0 specification connector, with the pins offset just 0.45mm deep into the connector. The GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition, on the other hand, has been using a modified version with contacts moved inwards by 1.7 mm, similar to the new 12V2x6 connector, since it went on sale.– reports Igor’sLAB.
This may not be a full implementation of the new 12V2x6 design. NVIDIA itself, as well as MSI, have never said that their versions of the RTX 4070 will use enhanced power connectors. However, a visual comparison of video cards reveals obvious changes in the design of the connector used (see figure below).
No changes are planned for the lower models of the GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards, i.e. the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060, as these initially use conventional 8-pin power connectors. This makes the GeForce RTX 4070 the first model of the GeForce RTX 40 series graphics card to feature an improved power connector.
