The mobile Ryzen 9 6900HX proved to be significantly faster than its predecessor, but that may not be enough to beat Intel Alder Lake

The Geekbench benchmark database contains the first performance data for the latest Ryzen 9 6900HX processor of the Rembrandt Zen 3+ series. The novelty has shown mixed results.

The AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX is an 8-core, 16-thread, 3.3-4.9 GHz chip with integrated next-generation RDNA 2 graphics with 12 compute units. The chip is manufactured using a 6 nm process technology.

AMD’s HX series of mobile processors debuted last year. Its function is support for overclocking. OEMs have the right to choose what TDP to set for a processor in a specific laptop model. Unfortunately, Geekbench doesn’t show any power consumption, so it’s not possible to say for sure what configuration of the Ryzen 9 6900HX was used in the Lenovo laptop that participated in the tests.

The processor in a Geekbench single-core test Ryzen 9 6900HX scored 1593 points, and in multi-core – 10,151 points. It turned out to be 12% and 33% faster than the Ryzen 9 5900HX model, respectively, in similar tests.

Compared to its Intel counterpart, the 14-core, 20-thread Alder Lake P-series Core i9-12900H, the AMD Rembrandt processor performed significantly worse. The Intel chip was 7% to 21% faster in the single-threaded test and 37% to 42% faster in the multi-threaded test. However, as mentioned above, the AMD processor’s manufacturer-specified power consumption is currently unknown, so Ryzen’s performance may end up being higher. In addition, this is only a test, and the final verdict on the performance of new items can be made later.

The first laptops based on Alder Lake-P processors will go on sale today. Models based on AMD Ryzen 6000 processors, in turn, will have to wait until February 1st. However, reviews of this may appear earlier. As you know, some laptop models based on these chips will come with GeForce RTX 3080 Ti mobile graphics cards. Independent reviews of these accelerators will also appear starting today. As for the new Radeon RX 6000 mobile graphics cards, their release date is still unknown.
