Released in 2009, New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii also earned that title – 1.4 million copies in 7 days and 10 million copies in its eighth week of release. It took Nintendo nine years to surpass that result. In 2018, a new record was set by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which sold just over 12 million copies in 24 days.
Less than five years later, the record was broken by a game in The Legend of Zelda series. On May 12, 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released on the Nintendo Switch as a top contender for Game of the Year. This is the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, in which Link, along with Princess Zelda, must defeat Ganondorf before destroying the Kingdom of Hyrule.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also broke another record, becoming the fastest-selling The Legend of Zelda game in its 37-year history. Before her, the title belonged to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which was released in 2011.
