As promised, on February 9th, Sony AI in partnership with Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced “Breakthrough Project” in the field of artificial intelligence – Gran Turismo Sophy (GT Sophy).
GT Sophy is a superhuman artificial intelligence (autonomous agent) capable of racing at competitive levels with the best Gran Turismo pilots in the world.
Wheel-to-wheel combat with real people GT Sophy was trained in Gran Turismo Sport through a comprehensive reinforcement learning system in three areas: vehicle control, tactics and racing etiquette.
Training began in January 2021. In July, GT Sophy lost to the people in the first joint competition with the Gran Turismo Sport racers with a score of 86:70 and won in October (the second competition) by a double margin (104:52) .
Sony AI notes that GT Sophy’s artificial intelligence in the future is not intended to replace human interaction, but on the contrary to enrich the gaming experience for all players.
“We envision a future where AI agents can take creators and developers to new levels of innovation and open doors to unimaginable possibilities.”said Ueli Gallizzi, Senior Vice President of the Future Technology Group at SIE.
GT Sophy will reportedly debut in Gran Turismo 7 with a free update after release. The racing simulator is expected to premiere on March 4th this year on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
