Recall that at the beginning of Overwatch 2, it was subjected to several large DDoS attacks and players faced disconnects, connection difficulties (queues to enter stretched to 50,000 people) and loss of cosmetic items.

Shortly after the release, there were also subscribers to prepaid tariffs complainedNot being able to link a phone number to their Battle.net account is a prerequisite for playing Overwatch 2, which also applies to users of the first part.

In light of recent events, Blizzard has decided to remove the requirement to link a phone number “most existing Overwatch players”. We’re talking about everyone who has played since June 9, 2021. The change will take effect on October 7th.

New players are not exempt from the procedure: Blizzard remains confident that the SMS Protect system will help protect the community from cheaters and reduce the level of toxicity.

On the technical side, Blizzard has simplified the process of creating a queue for entering Overwatch 2 (to avoid a player getting into two chains at once) and is working on further optimization of the system.

In addition, developers continue to work on improving stability and fighting player database congestion by adding new nodes. The task requires a careful approach, so the situation will not improve quickly.

Blizzard also assured that it does not solve problems with missing items and/or progress (in fact, nothing was lost) as well as incorrectly blocked heroes for new users (re-entering the game usually helps).

Overwatch 2 Early Access and Season 1 launched October 4 on PC (Battle.net), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. They promise regular seasonal updates and a Battle Pass instead of loot boxes.
