Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio held an event where it talked about its achievements, shared its plans for the future and also introduced the Nio Phone smartphone. In an exclusive interview with the resource CNBC The company’s co-founder and president Qin Lihong said at least half of Nio electric vehicle users are expected to purchase the new product. He added that the smartphone would be available to all consumers in China, not just Nio device owners.
Lihun noted that Nio’s mobile app has 600,000 daily active users, which is about 1.5 times the number of users of the company’s electric vehicles. So Nio already has a certain number of potential smartphone buyers, and their number will only grow in the future.
Of course, the new product offers additional functions for owners of Nio electric vehicles. Although the Nio Phone resembles a typical smartphone, it has a special button that allows it to be used as a car key. The new product can also easily connect to the car, for example, so that the user can, for example, transfer a video conference from a mobile device to the car’s systems, Lihun added.
As previously reported, the Nio Phone smartphone is equipped with an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. The device has up to 16GB of RAM and a flash drive capacity of up to 1TB. The battery has a capacity of 5200mAh and supports 66W fast wired charging, 50W fast wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging.
The Nio Phone’s 6.81-inch screen supports 2K resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. At maximum brightness within 1800 nits2 The screen covers the DCI-P3 color space. For taking photos and videos, the smartphone has a triple camera with a 50-megapixel main sensor, as well as a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle module and a 50-megapixel camera with a periscope-shaped telephoto lens. High sound quality is ensured by speakers that support Dolby Atmos technology.
The proprietary SkyUI interface based on Android is used to control the smartphone. Nio Phone supports UWB connectivity, allowing it to be used as a digital key for Nio electric vehicles. In addition, the smartphone can support connection to multiple Nio electric vehicles. In addition, Nio Phone supports unlocking of electric vehicles using NFC technology, which can be used even when the battery level is low (within 48 hours). The new product is manufactured by Weilai. Nio has no plans to launch a smartphone in Europe – at least until the market gets bigger, Lihun noted.
Depending on the configuration, the Nio Phone costs between 6,490 yuan (around $890) and 7,499 yuan (around $1,027).
