In the second half of the year, Ryzen socket AM5 processors will appear that will support DDR5 memory and the high-speed PCI Express 5.0 bus, according to the results of AMD representatives at CES 2022. They emphasize that the exact timing of the appearance of hybrid processors in this performance depends on the situation with the prices of DDR5 memory.
Resource Representative Tom’s hardware was able to speak to David McAfee, AMD corporate vice president and general manager of customer operations. According to him, when deciding when to launch the Socket AM5 platform, the company will consider both the availability of DDR5 memory and the price level for it. AMD will be closely monitoring the expansion of DDR5 in the marketplace for the optimal time to introduce Socket AM5 to customers.
Rembrandt APUs combining Zen 3+ computing architecture and RDNA 2 graphics architecture will provide DDR5 support in the desktop and therefore require Socket AM5. DDR4 support for them is not provided at all, so the critical factor in choosing when to announce it will be precisely the degree of penetration of DDR5 modules in the market and their cost.
This factor did not play a special role in the mobile versions of Rembrandt, as they also support LPDDR5, which has no problems with its availability. In the desktop segment, the lack of DDR5 DIMMs is due to the lack of a sufficient number of power management circuits that are located on the module itself. Later, when the scarcity problem subsides, more Ryzen 6000-based laptops with DDR5 SODIMMs will hit the market.
Remember that in the second half of the year there will be the debut of AMD Ryzen processors with Zen 4 architecture, which will be manufactured in 5 nm technology and will also be installed in the AM5 socket. In fact, the availability of DDR5 is primarily important in view of the timing of the release of hybrid processors in this power, aimed at a wide range of consumers. Raphael processors without integrated graphics will play in a higher price range; the availability and costs of DDR5 are not so important for them.
