Streaming service Netflix plans to add ads later this year, having previously planned to launch them within two to three years. The introduction of advertising will make it cheaper to subscribe to the service and potentially return the audience the service has begun to lose for the first time in a decade.

According to the New York Times, a recent memo from the company to employees says the ads will be added in the last three months of 2022, and around the same timeline, access to the service will be blocked by account sharing .
The notice noted that all of Netflix’s competitors, with the exception of Apple TV Plus, either already offer an ad-supported video streaming offering or have announced a future one.
Recall that earlier Reed Hastings, one of Netflix’s chief executives, told investors that the company would consider launching an advertising platform and try to “Find out within the next year or two“.
Netflix offers a variety of plans to pay for streaming videos, with the most popular plan costing $15.49 per month. For comparison, one of its competitors, HBO Max, offers an ad-free service for $15 per month and charges $10 per month for the service with ads.
