The leadership of the Chinese company Tencent Holdings announced to employees the creation of an “Augmented Reality” department, which will develop the concept of the metaverse. About that writes Reuters news agency, citing its own informed sources.
According to available data, the task of the new division will be to organize the development of the company towards augmented reality, including the development of hardware and software for the creation of virtual worlds. The division will become part of the Interactive Entertainment Business Group and will be led by Tencent Games Global CTO Li Shen.
According to Quelle, more than 300 employees will work in the new division. In the future, the company’s plans will be adjusted and the number of employees can be adjusted depending on the work results and the market situation. It is noted that the department was created earlier in the year, but the company kept this information secret for several months. Tencent officials refrain from commenting on the matter.
According to the report, Tencent has been considering creating an augmented reality department since late 2020. At the same time, the increase in staff is offset by job cuts in other divisions of Tencent, which is taking measures to control costs and reduce non-core activities.
Little is currently known about Tencent’s plans for the Metaverse. Last November, a company official said Tencent has a lot of it “Technological and functional building blocks” to implement the concept of the metaverse, but no details have been announced.
