Steam now officially supports controllers from Nintendo Switch Online

Valve announced that Steam has received official support for Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, and Sega Mega Drive classic controllers. They can only be purchased by Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

These controllers have fewer buttons than modern gamepads supported by Steam. But for games that use fewer buttons, they’re fine. For example for small indie projects, platformers and retro compilations. Users can also reconfigure the buttons for more convenience.

Subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online service could purchase a Nintendo Entertainment System controller in 2018 and a Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 2019. Then, back in 2021, Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive gamepads became available for purchase.

Accessories are designed primarily for games from the Nintendo Switch Online service library. There are currently 93 projects available for the Nintendo Entertainment System, 72 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, 30 for the Sega Mega Drive and 19 for the Nintendo 64. This number will increase over time.
