SSD overtook the HDD supply in pieces by 44%, but lost capacity at times

According to a recent report by Trendfocus, shipments of solid state drives increased significantly in the fourth quarter of 2021. In quantitative terms, the increase was 11%, and in terms of total capacity 29% year-on-year. At the end of 2021, 44% more solid state drives were released in chunks than traditional hard drives, but they still lag about 80% in terms of capacity.

If according to the results of the third quarter, the total shipments of solid state drives amounted to nearly 82.524 million units, in the fourth they increased to 91.778 million. In terms of total capacity, shipments increased to 69.377 EB.

Samsung has maintained its position as the leading SSD vendor. The top 3 also included Western Digital and SK hynix. Of note, following fourth-quarter results, all three had declines in shipment volume related to continued component shortages. Nevertheless, other manufacturers were able to take advantage of this situation and expand their market shares. Quantitatively, Samsung increased its shipment share from 25% in the third quarter to 25.8% in the fourth quarter. However, in terms of volumes shipped, the company’s share of the total market fell from 40% to 37%.

Western Digital’s quantitative shipments declined from 17.1% to 15.2% in the fourth quarter and rose from 14.1% to 14.2% in terms of volume shipped. SK hynix accounted for 12.5% of SSD shipments by volume, down 1.8% from Q3 2021. Shipments by volume decreased from 10% to 9%. Kioxia was the fourth-largest SSD vendor in the fourth quarter. Quantitatively, their share was 10.4%, down 1.1% from Q3 2021. However, in terms of SSD capacity, the company grew from 8.4% to 8.5%.

A total of 373.2 million SSDs were shipped in 2021. Their total volume was 266.3 EB. At the same time, the total capacity of NAND flash memory chips released in 2021 was 597.8 EB. The difference has gone to smartphones and other devices. For comparison, total HDD shipments in 2021 were 1338 exabytes by volume. Also note that in the table below there is an error in the penultimate line: the average capacity of a hard disk is 5166 MB, while an SSD is 713 MB, that is, the values are mixed up.
