The original Sony PlayStation VR virtual reality headset has become a real hit. Last year the developers showed off the controllers used in conjunction with the second generation Sony VR headset, and now it has been announced that Sony is preparing to start mass production of the PlayStation VR 2, although this device has not yet officially been the Presented to the public.
According to the source, the production of the PlayStation VR 2 VR headset is to be taken over by the Chinese company Goertek, which Sony previously supplied with components for the original VR headset and the PlayStation 5 game console.
Goertek is currently at an all-time high, powered by a partnership with Meta Platforms to manufacture the Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2) VR headset. Goertek expects further growth this year as the “big Japanese partner” ships 1-2 million next-generation VR headsets. Given that there aren’t many big players in the virtual reality segment right now, especially from Japan, there’s little doubt that it’s Sony and the PlayStation VR 2 VR headset.
Note that the original PlayStation VR headset is still supported and Sony recently announced several new games for it. PlayStation VR sales data has not been released since January 2020, but by that time Sony was known to have sold more than 5 million copies of this device. It is obvious that this value has risen significantly at the moment.
