Silicon Motion is preparing PCIe 5.0 consumer SSD controllers

It has been announced that Silicon Motion is working on a brand new controller for PCIe 5.0 SSDs aimed at the consumer market. This is indicated by the manufacturer’s roadmap, according to which mass production of controllers for consumer SSDs with the latest interface is to begin this year.

According to reports, Silicon Motion has two PCIe 5.0 SSD controllers for the consumer market and two for the enterprise market. The MonTitan SM8366 and MonTitan SM8308 controllers announced last year are intended for company drives. The SM2508 and SM2504XT controllers planned for this year will be used in the consumer segment.

Manufactured on a 12nm process, the SM2508 controller conforms to the NVMe 2.0 standard with support for eight channels, DDR4-3200 cache, LDPC-based error correction and E2E data protection. The first technical samples of the SM2508 were manufactured in January this year, and mass production of drives with this controller will start at the end of the first quarter of 2023.

The SM2504XT controller has similar specifications but is based on a 7nm process, supports four channels and supports DDR4-3600 cache. Unlike high-performance drives that ship earlier, consumer SSDs with the SM2504XT controller won’t arrive until the second half of 2023.

Note that currently the only PCIe 5.0 SSD available on the market is CFD Gaming’s Japan-only model. No major solid state drive manufacturer has presented solutions equipped with the latest interface and focused on the consumer market.
