Sega canceled the multiplayer shooter HYENAS from the makers of A Total War Saga: Troy several months before release

Game development is a messy process. Just a few weeks ago you were testing your project on Steam, and today your creation is dead. That’s exactly what happened to the online sci-fi shooter HYENAS from the Bulgarian branch of Creative Assembly (A Total War Saga: Troy).

The company intends to reduce a number “Fixed costs” in several European studios, including Creative Assembly. As a result of the changes, Sega Sammy expects losses of 14.3 billion yen (approximately $96 million) by the end of the current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2024).

HYENAS players, as part of a group of three hyenas, had to steal pop culture artifacts from Earth from the “Getters” (trading ships owned by Martian billionaires) and then escape with the loot. In addition to four other user teams, the robbers were confronted with the miners’ defense systems.

HYENAS tried to differentiate itself from its competitors in the genre through the versatility of each hyena (weapons, abilities, personality) and shooting in zero gravity. It was expected to be released on PC in 2023 (steam, Epic Games Store), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S.
