Samsung introduces Exynos 2200 flagship chip with AMD RDNA2 graphics

Samsung Electronics introduced the latest Exynos 2200 single-chip mobile platform with a powerful Samsung Xclipse 920 graphics accelerator based on AMD RDNA2 architecture. The company claims that the solution uses the most advanced ARM CPU cores available on the market, along with an upgraded Neuro Processing Unit (NPU). The option is suitable for performing common tasks, running resource-intensive games, working with media content.

Samsung announced its partnership with AMD back in 2019. The company claims that the Xclipse 920 is a unique GPU that occupies an intermediate position between GPUs for mobile devices and solutions for consoles in terms of performance.

The AMD RDNA2 architecture at the heart of the solution offers hardware-accelerated ray tracing as well as VRS shading, technologies previously only available on PCs and consoles. In addition, AMIGO technology is used, which increases overall performance and optimizes energy consumption.

Built on 4nm process technology, the Exynos 2200 is one of the first in the industry to use the latest Armv9 cores, which are faster than Armv8. The novelty’s octa-core CPU features one of the most powerful Arm Cortex-X2 cores, three high-performance Cortex-A710 cores and four energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores.

Compared to the Exynos 2100 model, the new product uses a more productive integrated AI system and a neuroprocessor – according to Samsung, the NPU model is twice as productive as that used in the previous generation flagship. At the same time, the NPU has two instead of three cores compared to the predecessor.

The Exynos 2200 has an integrated 3GPP Release 16 5G modem that supports frequencies up to 6 GHz and mmWave. According to Samsung, the use of E-UTRAN New Radio – Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) technology, which allows you to work simultaneously with 4G and 5G, provides connection speeds of up to 10 Gb/s. In addition, the model supports a number of cryptographic technologies, in particular, the Integrated Secure Element (iSE) cryptographic processor is used.

The image processor (ISP) architecture has been redesigned to support the latest sensors up to 200 megapixels. When using one camera, continuous shooting is supported at a frequency of 30 frames / s and a resolution of 108 megapixels, when two cameras work simultaneously – up to 64 + 36 megapixels. It is noteworthy that the novelty can work with 4 cameras at the same time and supports the connection of up to 7 cameras. Video recording supports 4K HDR, 4K at 120 FPS or 8K at 30 FPS.

With the NPU, the image processor is able to recognize multiple objects, environments and faces within a scene and then automatically adjusts color rendering, white balance, exposure and other parameters.

Mass production of the Exynos 2200 model has already begun.
