According to Omdia market researchers, Samsung shipped 135.8 million LCD smartphones and 135.1 million models OLED. Shipments of the former rose 41% year over year, while shipments of smartphones with OLED fell 15%.

As a result of growth in LCD smartphone production, Samsung’s business profitability also increased, with sales of 4.23 trillion won (US$3.39 billion), up 740% from 2020 (503 billion won or 403, $61 million). In the $80-$400 price segment, the share of LCD devices rose to 68.7%, while sales of OLED smartphones in this segment generated 10.137 billion won ($8.13 million), down by 3.9% compared to 2020.

Since 2010, Samsung has played a leading role in developing the OLED smartphone market. The company is gradually starting to use such solutions not only in mid-range and even entry-level models, but Chinese manufacturers are also following its example. However, in 2021, the situation changed due to the lack of components – to reduce costs, cheaper solutions had to be used everywhere, including LCD. Last but not least, problems with the supply of OLEDs played a role.

According to industry experts, the market for smartphones with OLED displays will stagnate in 2022. According to Counterpoint Research, manufacturer adoption of OLED displays in smartphones was 42% in 2021, an increase of 10 percentage points. higher than 2020. This year, however, they forecast an increase of only 2 percentage points.
