Samsung Display is developing technology to hide Face ID for iPhone 15 Pro

South Korean Samsung Display is developing technology that will allow you to hide the Face ID sensor under the screen in future iPhones – this will help avoid the use of cutouts and bangs in new generation displays. At the same time, in the first phase, the technology will only be available in the Pro versions of the new iPhones.

According to publication the electr Citing industry sources, while the iPhone 14 Pro models will have both a camera hole and a pill-shaped cutout for sensors in the displays, the iPhone 15 Pro will only have one hole for the camera – hiding the Face ID sensor underneath be the display so it’s not visible to the naked eye – like the camera in the foldable Galaxy Z Fold 3, for example.

It is known that on the Fold 3, the pixel density in the area of the display that covers the camera is significantly lower than in the rest of the panel – this allows light to fall on the camera sensor, but still affects the quality of the photos. Whether the Face ID sensor under the screen is as effective and secure as the current version remains to be seen. Samsung Display is known to be collaborating with Canadian company OTI Lumionics to develop the technology.

Korean version of the news the electr reports that Samsung intends to use the technology in the Galaxy Z Fold 5 first, and the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with hidden sensors will be released later.

The use of Subscreen Face ID is not predicted for the first time for the iPhone. Already last year, the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that in 2023 the company wants to use Face ID in a new format in at least one iPhone model, as well as the expert Ross Young (Ross Young).
