Let’s remember that the last time sales of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice were reported was when a content update was announced in July 2020 – at that time (i.e. 16 months after release) the action film’s earnings exceeded 5 million copies.
More than three years after this success, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice managed to double this number – the game’s total sales worldwide already amounted to 10 million copies as of September 2023.
For comparison, Dark Souls 3 conquered the same peak just over four years after its release. However, it’s worth noting that despite some continuity, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a new franchise and not an established franchise.
The novelty of the intellectual property hasn’t stopped FromSoftware’s next project after Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring. It took less than a month for it to reach 12 million copies sold.
IN note On the official Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice website, the developers thanked fans for their support: “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who played this project.”.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was released in March 2019 on PC (Steam), PS4 and Xbox One. The game won the top prize at the 2019 Game Awards and the User Award Steam Awards 2019.
