Sales of processors for smartphones rose by a third in the first quarter – Qualcomm took almost 45% of the market

Strategy Analytics has published statistics on the global market for smartphone processors for the first quarter of this year: In monetary terms, chip shipments increased by more than a third.

Industry volume reached $8.9 billion during the period, up 35% from a year ago. This rapid growth is explained by the increase in the range of products supporting 5G: they accounted for 53% of the total number of processors sold in three months.

The biggest player in the industry is Qualcomm with a monetary share of 44.6%. MediaTek comes second with 24.7% and Apple closes the top 3 with 21.9%. Thus, these three companies control more than 90% of the global market for mobile processors. The top 5 also included Samsung LSI and Unisoc.

The most popular chips for Android smartphones are MediaTek Dimensity 700, Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Dimensity 810, Dimensity 900 and Snapdragon 888/888+.

Approximately 80% of all smart cellular chips shipped during the quarter were manufactured by TSMC. Products manufactured to the norms of 7 nanometers and below accounted for 48% of the total number of shipments.
