Profile media and tech bloggers have published reviews of the new Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT graphics cards. In this article we analyze the most important theses about the older Radeon RX 7800 XT model. Quick Conclusions: The new product turned out to be slightly faster than the previous generation Radeon RX 6800 XT model while being $150 cheaper. In addition, the new AMD card proved to be more productive and cheaper than the competing GeForce RTX 4070, but “traditionally” lost in ray tracing.

Let’s briefly recall that the Radeon RX 7800 XT is based on the Navi 32 XT graphics chip with 60 execution units (3840 stream processors). The gaming frequency of the graphics processor of the Radeon RX 7800 XT model is specified as 2124 MHz, the boost frequency is 2430 MHz. The Radeon RX 7800 XT received 16 GB of GDDR6 memory with a speed of 19.5 Gbps per pin, support for a 256-bit bus and a maximum throughput of 624 GB/s and 2708 GB/s, respectively, considering of 64 MB infinity cache. The power consumption of the accelerator is given as 263 watts. The target gaming resolution for the Radeon RX 7800 XT is 1440p. In 25 TechPowerUp gaming tests, the Radeon RX 7800 XT is 4% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070 in games with raster graphics (without ray tracing).

The portal notes that the RX 7800 XT outperformed the competition by 18% in some cases. An example is the game Cyberpunk 2077. At the same time, the performance of the AMD card was sometimes up to 8% lower than the performance model of the RTX 4070, for example in Deathloop.

The new Radeon card also proved to be faster than the GeForce RTX 3080, one of the most popular models of the previous generation. In the previous generation of Radeon accelerators, the new Radeon RX 7800 XT only surpassed the Radeon RX 6800 XT by 3%.
The Tom’s Hardware portal specifies similar values. In their tests, the Radeon RX 7800 XT was 7% faster than the RTX 4070 and a whopping 40% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti (8GB and 16GB). However, the results vary depending on the game.
As expected, AMD’s new product was slower than its competitor when it came to ray-tracing games, according to TechPowerUp, dropping an average of 15% in performance versus the GeForce RTX 4070. Tom’s Hardware claims that the Radeon RX 7800 XT lags the GeForce by up to 27% in their tests for ray-tracing RTX 4070 lags behind. But in the end it all depends on how actively the developer of a particular game used this technology.

According to TechPowerUp charts, the Radeon RX 7800 XT is still faster than the GeForce RTX 4070 in 1080p bitmap games. However, the performance difference is reduced to an average of 2%. At the same time, the combined result of tests with raster graphics and ray tracing, according to Tom’s Hardware, shows the GeForce RTX 4070’s lead by 9% over the new AMD.
The performance difference between the Radeon RX 7800 XT and the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti decreases from 40% to 28% under the same conditions. In addition, the performance difference between Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 6800 XT also varies. In some tests, the novelty was 2% slower, in others up to 10% faster.

According to TechPowerUp, the Radeon RX 7800 XT is an average of 2% faster than the GeForce RTX 4070 in bitmap games at 4K resolution. Tom’s Hardware, on the other hand, notes that the combined performance of the GeForce RTX 4070 (raster graphics + ray tracing) in 4K resolution 5% higher than that of the new product.
In terms of energy efficiency, the Radeon RX 7800 XT is inferior to its competitors. On the one hand, it consumes 50W less than the previous generation RX 6800 XT graphics card. However, AMD’s new product is less efficient compared to NVIDIA models. The RX 7800 XT averaged 235W for 1080p gaming and 250W for 1440p and 4K. The same GeForce RTX 4070 consumes around 172-194 watts on average, writes Tom’s Hardware. TechPowerUp lists a maximum of 201 watts in games for the RTX 4070 card. Against the backdrop of the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, the AMD card lags even further behind. The RTX 4060 Ti version with 8 GB memory consumes an average of 137-147 watts, with 16 GB memory it is 146-157 watts.

As for the thermal performance of the Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics card, TechPowerUp managed to warm up the graphics processor to 75 degrees Celsius. The temperature at the hottest part of the accelerator was 92 degrees Celsius. Tom’s Hardware ran his card up to 71 degrees on the GPU in 1440p and 4K gaming. At 1080p the temperature of the card was 70 degrees. However, by manipulating the settings of the fan operating mode, it was possible to reduce it to 60 degrees.
As noted by TechPowerUp, custom versions of the Radeon RX 7800 XT will be available in the market with more efficient cooling systems.

The TechPowerUp review finds that the $600 raster graphics GeForce RTX 4070 is 2% slower but 20% more expensive than the $500 RX 7800 XT. However, the NVIDIA card is on average 16% faster in ray tracing, has 4 GB less video memory and at the same time its power consumption is 50 W lower. The main selling point of the RTX 4070 is the DLSS 3 technology and in particular the frame generator. It is up to the buyer to decide whether the overpayment of $100 is worthwhile. It is also noted that the $ 450 GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB model has become even less attractive against the background of an AMD graphics card. It’s up to 30% slower for raster graphics and up to 10% slower for ray tracing.
In general, the reviewers concluded that the RX 7800 XT is a good choice for those who don’t want to pay too much for ray tracing, but still want a very powerful graphics card for gaming at 1440p, which when using normal (bitmap) Graphics outperforms the more expensive GeForce RTX 4070.
