PNY introduces GeForce RTX 4070 Blower Edition with turbine cooler

PNY presented the GeForce RTX 4070 Blower Edition graphics card at Computex 2023, which is equipped with a tangential fan cooling system. This is not the first decision of this kind. Previously, Leadtek had announced the same model with a “Turbine”. How NVIDIA itself stands on this is an open question.

Many may think that graphics cards equipped with such a cooling system are a relic of the past. However, they are enjoying increasing popularity again, for example with PC manufacturers. Such accelerators take up much less space than video cards with traditional cooling systems, which in modern reality have long grown to more than three expansion slots and are equipped with three cooling fans. The only problem is that such an accelerator is not always convenient to use, for example, in compact assemblies, where the free space for each element of the system is very limited. In addition, graphics cards with tangential fans can be used much more conveniently in server solutions and workstations, where several accelerators are often installed at the same time. The main disadvantage of such cooling systems is the lower cooling capacity and the noise level, which is higher than cooling systems with conventional fans.

Everything is different with the PNY GeForce RTX 4070 Blower Edition model. At least that’s what the manufacturer claims. According to PNY, the 82mm model’s fan has a noise level of 32 dBA or less, which is about the same as a typical axial fan in gaming graphics cards. True, it should be borne in mind that the power consumption of the video card is only 200 W, so there is no need to heavily load the cooling system.

The card is equipped with an 8-pin connector for additional power supply. The dimensions of the graphics card are 278.4 × 119.4 × 40 mm. It occupies two expansion slots in the PC case.

NVIDIA actively opposes the release of such cards by its partners. An example is at least the GeForce RTX 3090, the production of which NVIDIA has officially banned with cooling systems with tangential fans. After that, almost all presented models with similar CO disappeared from sale. NVIDIA doesn’t want these cards to compete with its professional workstation graphics accelerators, even though GeForce gaming models lack some of the hardware and software features found only in professional models. This is very likely why manufacturers like Leadtek and PNY introduced the mid-range GeForce RTX 4070 rather than the older RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 cards in this design.
