Recently, the official release of the new multiplayer online game New World from Amazon took place. It seems that along with the premiere, the problem of failing video cards returned: messages from users began to appear on the Web again, complaining about burnt out graphics accelerators after launching the game.
Even during the beta testing of New World, the owners of various GeForce RTX 30 series models from EVGA complained about the failure of video cards. As it turned out, the reason was in the soldering defects in the power circuit in the early reference graphics accelerators. Buyers of GeForce video cards from other manufacturers also complained about similar problems. In addition, there have been complaints from the owners of AMD video cards. However, it was not possible to officially link these cases with the game, since the video cards failed for various reasons. But EVGA graphics cards did have a problem.
With the release of New World, complaints have resumed. First, about them with a link to their customers reported American company PowerGPU, which sells prefabricated gaming computers. Then similar complaints began to appear on the Reddit forum, where the owners of the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Eagle, Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming and Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3090 Vision models wrote about the burnt cards.
The victim was also the WinFuture portal, informing about the burned-out editorial GeForce RTX 3090 of an unspecified model from Gigabyte. At the same time, the site described the events that preceded the failure of the graphics accelerator. In particular, it was noted that this happened when the graphics in the menu were changed. The load on the video card at the moment of changing the settings increased sharply, the fans of the card cooling system began to rotate at 100% speed. After the game was closed, the card burned out.
PC Gamer Portal writesthat New World tested using different video card models. When changing the game settings, the journalists did notice a significant increase in the load on the graphics accelerator. In some cases, it reached 100%. It seemed that when changing the graphics settings, the game engine was trying to redraw the low-poly scene again, adding more and more textures to it, which created a serious load on the GPU. However, it was not possible to “kill” any of the PC Gamer video cards used in the experiment.
Why video card failures occur under the load of New World is still a mystery. At the moment, it is known that even during beta testing, a possible reason was the absence of a frame limiter in the game menu. With the release of a subsequent update, the game developer added it. Most likely, there is such a limiter in the final version, however, video card breakdowns continue to occur.
Owners of the latest high-performance models should be wary. Back in the summer, when the beta version of New World was released, complaints about burned-out video cards came from owners of EVGA GeForce RTX 3090, GeForce RTX 3080 (Ti) models, as well as Radeon RX 6800, Radeon RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6900 XT.
