Polish studio people can fly released Financial report for 2021 where she talked about the success of the Outriders shooter. As it turned out, in this regard the development of the game didn’t pay offand royalties from Square Enix were not received.
As part of the agreement, the publisher agreed to pay royalties only after reimbursement of its costs of developing, distributing, and advertising support to Outriders. At the end of the reporting period, sales of a game released on April 1, 2021 did not generate sufficient revenue to meet this requirement. Additionally, those in charge at People Can Fly are unsure if the shooter will ever pay off and the company will get the deductions due.
Square Enix doesn’t disclose sales dates for Outriders — that information isn’t even shared with its creators. Last August, Studio CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski indicated that 2-3 million copies had been sold by then.
“People Can Fly Group has not received any royalties as of December 31, 2021, meaning that the proceeds by the specified payment date from sales of Outriders were not sufficient to cover the costs incurred by the publisher for the development, distribution and promotion of the game”, – says the report.
Last May, Square Enix reported that Outriders had attracted more than 3.5 million users in its first month. The company also announced this “the highest level of participation in a cooperative mode” and noticed that “infinitely inspired” the success of the project. Probably, a significant part of gamers got access to the shooter through Xbox Game Pass, where the console versions appeared at the same time as the release. Later, the President of Square Enix Yosuke Matsuda (Yosuke Matsuda) said that thanks to the subscription, it managed to attract more players than expected.
In the first few weeks after publication, users complained about numerous technical problems. Many of them are still unresolved, and players are reporting server instability and poor performance. AT THE steam The shooter has “mixed” ratings (rating – 65%, total number of ratings – 42,000). Average score metacritical – 72-73/100.
The report also reveals that People Can Fly is working on five games, including two big-budget titles from established publishers, Project Gemini (Square Enix) and action-RPG Project Dagger with innovative gameplay and storytelling (Take-Two Interactive). Both are scheduled to appear in 2024 at the earliest.
Earlier this week, Square Enix announced that it would be selling some of its western studios and franchises to Embracer Group. The rights to Outriders (they are fully owned by the publisher – including DLC, sequels and non-game products) were not included in the deal.
Outriders is on PC (Steam, Epic game store), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, S and Google Stadia. On June 30th, the shooter gets its first major addition – The Wordslayer.
