Patriot Memory Announces Prototype PCIe 5.0 Bufferless Solid State Drive

At Computex 2023, Patriot Memory presented several new products. Below is a prototype PCIe 5.0 bufferless solid state drive.

According to the manufacturer, the novelty, which has not even been given a name, has not gone on sale for a long time. It may take up to a year for the company to finish developing this SSD model. The drive will be available in capacities from 1TB to 4TB and will offer sequential read speeds of up to 12,000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 10,500MB/s. It is known to be based on the Maxiotek controller.

The manufacturer also showed off the new Viper PV553 PCIe 5.0 drives, which come with up to 4GB of DDR4 buffer memory (that’s the amount of DRAM for a 2TB media). The Viper PV553 series SSD is based on the flagship Phison E26 controller and flash memory chips with a transfer rate of 2400 MT/s per pin. The drives are offered in 1, 2 and 4 TB sizes. They will go on sale next month.

Viper PV553 models are equipped with an active cooling system consisting of a heat sink and a small fan. Patriot says they’re still experimenting and picking the optimal speed for the latter.

The Patriot Viper PV553 drives will be able to offer sequential read speeds of up to 12,400 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 11,800 MB/s. Although the drive sample shown at the show came with an unattractive power cord, the company notes that the production sample will receive a black braided power cord with a black plug. It must be connected to the fan connector on the motherboard. In addition, the kit comes with an extension cable that can be used to connect the SSD directly to the power supply.

The manufacturer did not specify the cost of the Viper PV553 drives.
