NVIDIA won’t add DLSS support to GeForce RTX 3000 graphics cards – it’s too complicated

In a series of questions and answers hosted on NVIDIA’s website RedditCompany representatives shed some details on the DLSS 3 upscaling technology presented at the same time as the GeForce RTX 4090 and 4080 graphics accelerators. As explained by NVIDIA representatives, DLSS 3 is a combination of three technologies: DLSS Frame Generation, DLSS Super Resolution and NVIDIA Reflex. DLSS Super Resolution (or simply DLSS 2) and NVIDIA Reflex are already well-known technologies that work great on the current generation of GeForce RTX 3000 graphics cards. The DLSS Frame Generation technology relies in its work on a new hardware unit implemented in the Ada Lovelace architecture – an optical flow accelerator. It prepares preliminary data for a neural network running on tensor cores – an optical flow field in which information about the movements of individual image fragments is transmitted. This is why DLSS 3 cannot run on GeForce RTX 30-series cards: they don’t have an optical flow accelerator, and there’s no way to inexpensively implement DLSS frame generation technology.

At the same time, NVIDIA representatives acknowledged the possibility of implementing DLSS frame generation on tensor cores without using an optical flow accelerator, but explained that in this case the technology is unlikely to give the required performance and its use is inappropriate. Because of this, the company has no plans to make DLSS 3 available on Ampere or earlier graphics cards. However, their owners can continue to use DLSS 2 without any problems.

Because DLSS 2 is part of DLSS 3, legacy technology will continue to be supported. NVIDIA will not stop training its AI model and regularly releases updates to the libraries of DLSS 2. In addition, game developers can add support for DLSS 2 and DLSS 3 separately in their future versions, depending on their desire.

NVIDIA notes that integrating DLSS 3 into games is no more difficult than integrating DLSS 2. NVIDIA has the necessary plugins for this, and besides, native support for the new upscaling algorithm will soon be added to Unity, Unreal Engine and Frostbite Engine . As company representatives noted, DLSS 3 is a technology that is being adopted very quickly by the industry. His early-stage support will appear in 35 games, the first of which will be available in October.
