Notebook shipments continue to fall in January as inventories are too high

Combined shipments of the world’s top five laptop makers, excluding Apple, in January 2023 fell 29% mom and nearly halved from January last year, it said DigiTimes Research.

The decline is mainly due to two factors: the accumulated stocks of laptops are being cleared very slowly, and the market is now in a transition phase – brands will start launching their new products in the near future, and the orders for existing models are already declining.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) became the top-selling laptop brand in January: The company analyzes product inventories and adjusts production more efficiently than the competition. The second was Dell – it showed an increase in shipments on a monthly basis due to an increase in orders for enterprise models. Shipments of third-place Lenovo fell sharply in January month-on-month as the Chinese brand allowed a large amount of inventory build-up in key markets.

Compared to December, shipments of the world’s top three ODMs were down 24% in January. Compal showed the best results in this ranking: orders from Taiwanese brands remained at the same level, but its largest customer Dell increased the number of orders.
