Not enthusiastic: The new BioShock fell into production hell – the main problem cannot be solved in the fourth year

In the three and a half years since confirming development of the new BioShock, 2K Games has not revealed any details about the game. According to verified insider Oops Leaks, the project has gone into production hell.

“The new BioShock is in production hell, — wrote Oops Leaks in Twitter. — Despite a complete change of leadership, the curse of problematic development still weighs on the series. There will be no details about the game itself this time. This is probably my last post about them.

In a series of tweets, the insider shared more information on the status of the project. According to him, the development is complicated by personnel changes in Cloud Chamber, lack of work experience among a significant part of employees, controversial decisions of managers, lack of confidence in commercial success and poor organization of work processes. The production was also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the French Language Protection Act (Bill 96) passed in 2022 in Quebec (where one of the studio’s offices is located).

According to the source, development restarted for the fourth time in the summer of 2022. The main reason for the recent reboot was the difficulties of the script: over the years, the studio did not manage to find a worthy plot “so famous franchise”so the story has to be recreated. Rumor has it that the original head of the writing team was Jeffrey Yohalem (Jeffrey Yohalem), known for Far Cry 3, Child of Light and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. In December 2022, this position was taken over by Liz Albl, who has been involved in the work on Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, Watch Dogs: Legion, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Ghost of Tsushima. The entourage will probably remain the same – the events are said to take place in the Antarctic city of Borealis in the 1960s.

Either way, the fourth BioShock is gradually approaching release. In the last financial report Take-Two Interactive has indicated that the game is expected to be released in fiscal year 2025 (April 1, 2024 – March 31, 2025). However, Oops Leaks believes such deadlines can be met on one condition – if the announcement is made no later than this summer.

Oops Leaks reported on the project’s problems back in February 2022. Then the insider spoke about the departure of key employees and the publisher’s dissatisfaction with the pace of development, but noted that the state of the game isn’t quite like production hell and it could be released by the end of 2024.

Even earlier, the same source clarified that the new installment is subtitled Isolation and runs on Unreal Engine 5.

Meanwhile, BioShock inventor Ken Levine continues to work on the story shooter Judas at his Ghost Story Games studio. The publication can take place until April 2024.
