Nintendo reports falling Switch sales, but it could still become the most popular console in history

Nintendo announced its financial results for the past quarter. Published data indicates that global sales of Switch gaming consoles have increased to 139.36 million units, and thus the Nintendo device will soon surpass the PlayStation 2 in total sales and become the most popular gaming console of all time.

Over the past quarter, Nintendo sold 6.9 million consoles worldwide, bringing total Switch sales close to 140 million units. During the reporting period, the company sold 3.49 million Switch OLED consoles, 2.15 million standard Switch and 1.27 million Switch Lite units. “Despite a decline in sales compared to last year, sales were stable given that the platform is in its seventh year and results were generally in line with our expectations.”says the Nintendo report.

With Switch sales approaching 140 million units, the console has a good chance of overtaking Sony’s PlayStation 2, making it the best-selling gaming console of all time. Let us remind you that the Sony console has sold 157.68 million units since its release in 2000. Nintendo is also expected to launch a new version of the Switch this year.

Nintendo’s profit in the last quarter amounted to 136.7 billion Japanese yen ($920 million). Revenue decreased by 6% and amounted to 598.6 billion yen ($4.02 billion). The company received an operating profit of 184 billion yen ($1.24 billion), which is slightly lower than the same period last year, but still above analysts’ expectations.

Against this background, Nintendo raised its forecast for annual console sales from 15 million to 15.5 million units and for revenue from 1.58 trillion to 1.63 trillion yen. The Japanese fiscal year ends on March 31st. Last fiscal year, 17.94 million Switch consoles were sold, down 22% from the previous period. If the company reaches its target of 15 million consoles sold this year, it would mean a further decline in sales of 13.7%.

As for Switch games, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 780,000 copies in the quarter, and the game has sold 20.28 million copies since release. The recently released Super Mario Bros. Wonder has already sold 11.96 million copies, while Super Mario RPG has sold 3.14 million copies. The best-selling Switch game remains Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 60.58 million copies sold.
