Digital Foundry expert Alex Battaglia spoke about how the advanced graphics mode Ray Tracing: Overdrive (RT: Overdrive) affects the graphics and performance of the action RPG Cyberpunk 2077.
As a reminder, RT: Overdrive features path tracing, more accurate RT lighting and shadows thanks to RTX Direct Illumination technology, better indirect lighting, and full-resolution ray-traced reflections.
According to Battaglia, Cyberpunk 2077 features RT: Overdrive “looks very different” compared to ray tracing at “incredible” settings. Because even in this mode, the game combines ray tracing with well-known lighting techniques.
In RT: Overdrive, almost all direct and indirect lighting is ray-traced, resulting in a more believable overall image free from rasterization artifacts.
Beauty demands sacrifice: The scene with RT: Overdrive in 4K resolution only produces 18 frames/s even on the RTX 4090 graphics card. Performance increases to 59 fps with DLSS 2 and up to 95 fps with DLSS 3 (and its frame generation).
“Overdrive completely transforms graphics rooted in the previous generation to the level you can expect from the next generation of game engines.”says Battaglia.
RT: Overdrive will be released tomorrow, April 11th, with patch 1.62 as part of the Cyberpunk 2077 PC Tech Preview. NVIDIA and CDPR continue to work on path tracing improvements and optimizations.
