An app has been added to the Apple App Store Netflix game controller – Allows you to use your iPhone or iPad as a controller for games “coming soon on Netflix”, as stated in the app description. The administration of the platform has not yet announced the exact dates.
Back in October of last year, Netflix Vice President of Gaming Mike Verdu announced that the company “Learn Cloud Gaming”, and the opening of the platform’s second game studio was announced in Southern California, led by Chaco Sonny, former Overwatch Executive Producer at Blizzard Entertainment. Notably, the company has no plans to trespass into the territory of giants like PlayStation or Xbox – this “Added value”, not a replacement for consoles and a completely different business model. According to Mr Verdu, the defunct Google Stadia cloud service was a great technology solution but failed to survive due to a failed business model.
Netflix offers free streaming subscription games. This year alone, the company plans to release 40 titles. At the same time, 16 are being developed by their own studios and another 70 are being created by partners. Plans emerged in March to launch a catalog of cloud games for smart TVs using phones as controllers. In the past quarter, the streaming platform expanded its customer base by 5.9 million subscribers to 238.4 million.
The Netflix Gaming Controller app is currently only available for iOS devices. It was not possible to break into the database of the analysis company data.ai, so it is too early to judge the reviews.
