MSI has officially announced updated motherboards based on the Intel Z790 and B760 chipsets. They are primarily designed for the upcoming Raptor Lake-S Refresh processors, but are also compatible with 13th (Raptor Lake) and 12th (Alder Lake) generation Intel Core processors. The new products presented included board models from the MEG, MPG, MAG and PRO series.
The manufacturer notes that the main features of the updated motherboards are improved VRM performance subsystems. For example, the flagship model MEG Z790 Godlike MAX received a 28-phase duet rail power supply subsystem (with doublers) with a 26+2 circuit and phases designed for a current of 105 A. And even the entry-level PRO Z790 MAX is equipped with an 18-phase Duet Rail VRM power supply subsystem with phases designed for a current of 80 A.
All models of the MSI Z790 MAX motherboards support the Wi-Fi 7 standard with transfer speeds of up to 5.8 Gbit/s. In addition, they offer full support for PCIe 5.0 x16 interfaces. Many models include PCIe 5.0 slots for M.2 NVMe drives, as well as mechanisms for easy, tool-free SSD installation.
The MPG Z790 MAX and MEG Z790 MAX models received a new JAF1 connector. This allows you to connect an ARGB fan with just one cable.
Some board models include a USB4 PD100W expansion card with PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. It features two USB4 ports with speeds of up to 40Gbps and the ability to transmit up to 100W to an external device, as well as two DisplayPort 1.4 video outputs.
MSI MEG series
MSI highlights the use of direct contact VRM heat pipe cooling systems and efficient thermal pads with a thermal conductivity of 7 W/mK on the MEG 790 MAX motherboards. The MEG Z790 Godlike MAX and Z790 Ace MAX models are equipped with patented M.2 heatsinks with a magnetic core, simplifying the installation process. The MEG Z790 Godlike MAX board features a 4.5-inch LCD display that displays useful system information.
MSI MPG series
The MSI MPG board series has been expanded to include the MPG Z790 Carbon MAX WIFI, MPG Z790 Edge TI MAX WIFI and MPG B760M Edge TI WIFI models. All new products are equipped with screwless coolers for cooling M.2 ports. MPG Z790 MAX boards received VRM power supply subsystems with a phase count of up to 21 (105 A each) and with 19+1+1 circuits. The new products have PCIe 5.0 x16 connectors and support for Wi-Fi 7. The MPG Z790 Edge TI MAX WIFI model additionally received PCIe 5.0 support for SSDs, and the MPG Z790 Carbon MAX WIFI board will receive the aforementioned USB 4.0 PD100W extension included card.
The MPG B760M Edge TI WIFI model is equipped with a 12-phase VRM duet rail power supply subsystem with phases rated for a current of 75A. The new product offers screwless heatsink mounts for M.2 slots and is equipped with one PCIe 5.0 x16 connector and three M.2 PCIe 4.0 slots. The board also received USB Gen 3.2 Gen2x2 ports, a 2.5 Gigabit network adapter and Wi-Fi 6E support.
MSI MAG series
The popular MSI MAG board series has been supplemented with the MAG Z790 Tomahawk MAX WIFI model, which offers an 18-phase VRM power supply subsystem with a 16+1+1 circuit and 90 A phases and PCIe 5.0 slots Graphics card and SSD, Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5 gigabit network adapter.
The MAG board series has also been expanded to include the MAG B760M Mortar WIFI II and MAG B760M Mortar II models. Both use the Micro-ATX form factor, are built on a 6-layer PCB and feature 12-phase duet rail power supply subsystems. The new products offer one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, up to three M.2 PCIe 4.0 and are equipped with effective heatsinks for the VRM power subsystem and SSD.
According to MSI, PRO series motherboards offer a balance between functionality and the use of high-quality components. They are suitable for construction work and gaming systems. The PRO Z790 MAX board model is equipped with an 18-phase VRM power supply subsystem with a 16+1+1 circuit and 80A phases, offers a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, M.2 Shield Frozr heatsink and a 2.5 Gigabit network adapter and supports Wi-Fi 7. The board may also offer a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C port.
