Developer Free Fire is one of several Sea divisions hit by a wave of layoffs since August parent company quarterly loss report of $931 million.

According to two of the three Reuters sources, Sea has laid off about 15% (several hundred) of Garena’s Shanghai office staff. A company representative confirmed this “Some adjustments have been made to certain teams”.

In addition to the layoffs, Sea’s poor financial results led to the cancellation of several new games in development at Garena last quarter.

Free Fire is a mobile battle royale that has been Sea’s highest-grossing game in a long time. It debuted on iOS and Android in August 2017 and grossed its developers more than $4 billion by 2021 (Sensor Tower data).
