A week after the company officially announced its intention to lay off 11,000 employees, Mr. Zuckerberg described Messenger as being in the early stages of monetization compared to Facebook’s billionaire earners.* and Instagram*. “We talk a lot about long-term opportunities like the Metaverse, but the reality is that business messengers are likely to be the next big pillar of our business, and we’ve started to work harder on monetizing the WhatsApp apps and [Facebook] Delivery boy”– quotes the CEO Reuters.

Mr. Zuckerberg made a big bet last year on the metaverse, which are augmented and virtual reality technologies that he thinks will be the company’s main prize in the long run. Investors questioned the feasibility of this plan and Meta* Price more than doubled. Now the CEO’s tone, and perhaps his strategy, are beginning to change.

Meta’s largest output*, according to Mr. Zuckerberg, are frames. This is followed by investments in maintaining the infrastructure of the social networks integrated in the company. And about 20% more of the meta budget* go to Reality Labs – a department for the development of technologies of the metaverse. The division spends half of that money developing augmented reality technologies, and the company promises to bring smart glasses to market in the coming years. 40% goes to the development of VR headsets and the remaining 10% to Metaverse social platforms, including Horizon virtual worlds.

It is possible that work on monetization of messengers will also entail additional costs, but the head of the company has remained silent about this until now.
