Meta* shared stats with collaborators while presenting the “roadmap” for its Reality Labs division, which works on VR technologies and the metaverse. The presentation materials, which were made available to the media, talk about the company’s plans for the Quest line and say that almost 20 million headsets have already been sold.
The Oculus Quest model was launched in 2018 when the company was still called Facebook.*. It was a VR headset that didn’t require a connection to a smartphone or computer and was developed by Oculus, the Facebook* Bought in 2014. Already in October 2020, a new option appeared – Meta* Quest 2 with a higher resolution display compared to the previous model. It also features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 chipset, which offers a more immersive VR experience than the previous solution. Although the new product cost $100 more, it noticeably differed from the previous version for the better and received massive user acceptance.
In 2021 there were indications that around 4 million headsets had been shipped by that time, however the statistics are not accurate and the information needs to be confirmed. It is known that Andrew Bosworth (Andrew Bosworth), who currently holds the position of technical director of the company, claimed that Quest 2 not only overtakes its predecessor in sales, but also “overtakes all predecessors together”, without providing exact data. Later that year, Qualcomm reported that they were talking about selling 10 million copies of the Quest 2, but company officials quickly “withdrew” the information, emphasizing that these were third-party estimates.
Now sales stats are no longer a mystery, just like Meta’s new plans* regarding quests. Alongside the recently introduced Meta headset* Quest Pro, the company intends to launch Quest 3 this year, which is expected to be twice as powerful and twice as compact as Quest 2’s camera panel. Meta representative* has already told employees the new product will be more expensive than the previous model, but didn’t say by how much.
In the year 2024 meta* plans to implement another project – an affordable headset with the best performance and “the most attractive price in the consumer VR market” will be presented.
