M**a, Microsoft and other technology companies form the Metaverse Standards Forum to develop Metaverse standards

Tech Giants Meta*, Microsoft, Epic Games, and 33 other tech companies have formed a group to standardize Metaverse technologies. The so-called Metaverse Standards Forum aims to strengthen open, interoperable standards for augmented and virtual reality systems and 3D technologies.

According to a joint press release from the companies, the group wants to focus on this “pragmatic, actionable projects” like hackathons and prototyping tools to support common standards. In addition, participants are interested in developing a consistent terminology – while many market participants cannot even agree on a common definition of the term “metaverse”. In addition to the companies already mentioned, the founding members of the group include well-known market participants such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Unity as well as a number of smaller companies and entities.

At the same time, the main industry players such as Apple, which is actively working on AR and VR technologies, as well as well-known developers of solutions for games and virtual worlds, Niantic and Roblox, do not participate in the group. It is possible that new members will join once the group’s activities have started – the first meetings of industry representatives are scheduled to take place later this year.

The press release emphasizes that the Metaverse’s potential is best realized when it is built on open standards – building an open and inclusive overarching Metaverse requires a large number of common points of interaction.

The metaverse is a term that encompasses both virtual worlds and technical solutions for virtual and augmented reality. There are already standardization groups for many of its areas, many of which are included in the Metaverse Standards Forum. Speaking of the Metaverse, some don’t think at all that all worlds will be connected. So Epic positions the game Fortnite as a standalone metaverse. Open standards simply make it easier for developers to create content for different platforms, or perhaps allow users to export data and objects from one service to another.

Nonetheless, the establishment of the forum shows an interest in “formalizing” developments for the metaverse as a single field of information. Recently, representatives of Meta* demonstrated numerous samples of next-generation VR headsets.

* It is included in the list of public associations and religious organizations for which the court made a final decision, activities on the grounds of Federal Law No. 114-FZ of July 25, 2002 “On Combating Extremist Activity”.
