The referee’s decision was a rare victory for Meta*Who Owns Facebook?* and Instagram* The company actively defends against lawsuits brought by US federal agencies, state governments, foreign regulators and consumers. The social media giant has been accused of violating user privacy, antitrust laws and consumer rights.

In a statement of reasons, Judge Maurice A. Ross stated that Facebook’s privacy policy* clearly discloses the mechanisms for data acquisition by third parties, so that “A reasonable consumer must not be misled” in accordance with applicable county consumer protection law. The lawsuit was filed in 2018 by then-DC Attorney General Karl Racine in connection with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which the personal information of tens of millions of Facebook users was obtained.* without their consent, including residents of the District of Columbia.

Judge Ross told Facebook* Users have not only been properly informed about the mechanisms for transferring data to third parties, but have also been given instructions on how to limit this transfer. He added that the social network’s administration took reasonable steps to investigate the incident jointly with Cambridge Analytica and provided users with the necessary information after the incident was made public.

“While the county may disagree with Facebook’s approach* Given the situation, there are no legal grounds that would oblige Facebook to do so* other actions. Facebook* does not mislead consumers about their reaction to Cambridge Analytica.”concluded Judge Ross.
