The open-world action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the Nintendo Switch sold so well that it even appeared to contribute to the GDP of its native country, Japan.
Accordingly report Japan’s Cabinet of Ministers on the country’s GDP from April to June 2023: Personal consumption fell by 0.5%, but durable goods, which include video games, recorded a 2.8% increase.
According to the newspaper “Mainichi Shim Bun”, a representative of the Japanese Cabinet of Ministers largely associated such a sharp increase in the said indicator “New Game Releases”.
From April to June, several notable games were released simultaneously, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (May 12), Street Fighter 6 (June 2), and the action role-playing game Final Fantasy XVI (June 22).
While both Street Fighter 6 and Final Fantasy XVI sold well, the long-awaited game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as Nintendo’s fastest-selling game.
The cabinet didn’t name any specific games affecting the country’s GDP, but according to the Mainichi Shimbun, the success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom most likely had an impact on Japan’s economic performance.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch. The game sold over 10 million copies in the first three days of its release, and 18.5 million copies in less than two months.
